Introducing Pawcatuck Chiropractors
Dr. Michael Wise & Dr. Laura Gardiner
It was after a 20 foot fall while rock climbing, that I first became acquainted with chiropractic care. I had developed
a neck problem known as spastic torticollis that made the even the slightest movement of my neck unbearable. I also had a chronic earache that would last 10-12 hours a day. I thought these aliments would just go away but after three months and several visits to medical doctors I began to think that I may be spending the rest of my life with this pain. It was the healing hands of Dr. Sylvestor that change all that.
Dr. Sylvestor came highly recommended. One of my co-workers said that Dr. Sylvestor wasn’t your ordinary doctor and he was right. After doing a complete examination on me he took an x-ray of my neck and back. He pointed to a bone on the X-Ray and said "There's your problem." Next, he had me lie on my back and he proceed to adjust my neck using his hands to ease one of the spinal bones that had shifted out of place during my fall. He explained to me, that when the spine misaligns it can irritate the delicate nerves along the spinal column and that in turn can cause all sorts of problems. He explained a lot of scientific mumbo jumbo but what impressed me the most was that my pain was already subsiding by the time I left his office. After several more visits I was pain free and back to rock climbing.
I guess the time Dr. Sylvestor spent explaining this thing called chiropractic had more of an effect on me than I thought. No sooner had I graduated from Iowa State with a degree in scientific illustration, that I decided to shift my career goals to health care. Choosing chiropractic was a natural choice after the great experience I had.
I was accepted at several chiropractic colleges, including Palmer in Davenport Iowa, but decided on Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minneapolis. I was lured there by their diverse curriculum which included acupuncture and Chinese herbology. For the next four years I was submerged in the world of academics completing courses in biochemistry, human anatomy and physiology, histology, pathology, x-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the North Western's Public Clinic.
I graduated in 1998 but my training hasn’t stopped. My staff and I attend various seminars to keep up with the latest in the latest research and newest developments in the chiropractic profession. I have recently completed certification in “Graston”, a technique which provides a method of care for many soft tissues and extremity problems such as rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel.
